Yoga of the East and West

CATEGORIZED IN

Yoga is primarily a spiritual practice. The House of Wisdom draws on a variety of great spiritual traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity, to encourage personal transformation and creative and skilful living. The books first half covers starting out on the spiritual path, the challenges along the way, and the yogic understanding of the authentic Self. The second half looks more closely at the yogic tradition, with crucial chapters on mantra, paths to the sacred and the classic Eightfold Path of Yoga. Various exercises and practices for relaxation and discovering and harmonising the spiritual whole of ourselves are included.

REVIEWS & ENDORSEMENTS

As a description of the 'real' Yoga, the book is immensely valuable and interesting. There is a valuable bibliography and a helpful list of futher reading. This book is both challenging and inviting.... I was intrigued, stimulated and educated. ~ Peter Hope Jones, De Numine

Published in Swami Dharmananda's 80th year, the book offers an integration of non-dualistic ideas from Eastern and Western traditions, with practices for both body and mind, as well as advice on the spiritual path. A helpful guide written by a well known teacher who has devoted her life to her own spiritual search.. ~ , Yoga and Health magazine

The subtitle summarises the wisdom referred to in the title and the two authors each bring different perspectives to the spiritual dimensions of yoga practice. Although there are some practical exercises, the approach is academic and would be a challenging read for the newcomer. It offers much information and insights in Buddhist and Hindu spirituality in particular, as well as other western religious traditions. Any Sanskrit terminology is explained in situ and, with a good glossary, will be helpful for readers who wish to use this ancient sacred language to communicate esoteric concepts more succinctly. ~ , Pilgrims Mind-Body-Spirit Magazine

Headway into spiritual heartlands: A sincere look at a Yogic way, the self, mind, body and soul. Here is a way to cultivate a peaceful mind and heart. Share in the philosophy, the meditations and the wisdom in the' breath' and 'breathing' in a Yogic way. It touches on Hinduism and Buddhism and will enhance and encourage any serious students understanding. A book which needs time and stillness; for reading it well and for putting its wisdom into practice. Sadly I am too busy, so not a quick fix book. ~ B. A. Venn-lever, \"BeBe Ve\" (Berkshire, UK)

Exposition and exercises about the spiritual path and the practice of yoga, inspiring. It benefits from the dual perspectives and experiences of the two authors. ~ , Network Review

There was a lot to enjoy with this 223 page exciting and mind expanding guide about the practice of yoga and it's many benefits. I found the charts and illustrations to be very helpful also. I got a lot out of the exercises and it was nice to have explanations about the different practices and the way they can help me grow spiritually as a whole. I would recommend this eye-opening book to anyone who is drawn to this totally encompassing, multi-fold pathway of enlightenment. ~ Riki Frahmann, Mystic Living

This goes to the heart of spiritual wisdom. It is destined to become an important classic. ~ Glyn Edwards, World renowned medium, spiritual author and respected teacher of psychic science.
